Gastroenterology
Screening that can prevent colorectal cancer
A colonoscopy is one of the most effective ways to prevent colorectal cancer. During the exam, a gastroenterology specialist looks for polyps which are small growths in the colon that can often be removed before they turn into cancer. Screening is important even if you feel well and have no digestive symptoms.
Colorectal cancer is highly treatable when found early. Regular screening plays a key role in protecting your long-term health.
You may be due for a screening colonoscopy if you:
Your provider may recommend screening earlier or more often if you have certain risk factors, symptoms or a family history of colorectal disease.
A colonoscopy is typically an outpatient procedure. Before your exam, you’ll receive instructions to help prepare your colon so your provider can see clearly during the procedure. Sedation is used to keep you comfortable.
After the exam, you’ll recover briefly before going home the same day. Your care team will explain any findings and let you know when to schedule your next screening.
If you’re due for a routine screening colonoscopy and are feeling well, you may not need an office visit before your exam.
Our Direct Access Colonoscopy program allows eligible patients to request and schedule a screening colonoscopy without a referral or pre-procedure visit. A brief medical review helps ensure this option is safe and appropriate for you.
