Dedicated Breast MRI

The ChristianaCare Breast Center features the region’s only dedicated breast MRI, plus a team of experienced radiologists with the special expertise needed to interpret these images quickly and accurately.

Using strong magnets and radio waves instead of X-rays, MRI technology produces a highly detailed image of the breast. An MRI of the breast can be useful in the following situations:

Extra screening for women with a higher lifetime risk of breast cancer.
Extra screening for women with dense breast tissue.
Review of breast symptoms (i.e. nipple discharge).
Implant evaluation.
Pre-surgery assessment.
Post-surgery evaluation.

MRI does not replace mammography as a routine screening tool for finding breast cancer. Mammography remains the gold standard, and women should continue to get yearly mammograms. However, when used with mammography for high-risk women, MRI can be a powerful tool for finding breast cancer.

A Better Patient Experience

We want to make your experience with breast MRI as comfortable as possible. Here are some of the ways we do that:

The table is padded to help you stay comfortable during your test.
You enter the machine feet first, which may be easier for people who do not like small spaces.
We will provide headphones so you can listen to relaxing music during your MRI.

Preparing for Your Breast MRI

Your safety is our highest priority. Before your MRI, please tell us if you have any metallic objects or devices inside your body, because these may interfere with the MRI’s magnetic field. Please tell us if you have any of the following:

Cardiac pacemaker.
Any internal electronic device.
Artificial heart valve or stents.
Medical surgical clips or aneurysm clips.
Intrauterine device (IUD).
Hearing aid or implants.
Shunts.
Neurostimulators.
Artificial joints or metal rods.
Embedded shrapnel or metal fragments.
Kidney disease.

Your breast imaging team will provide detailed instructions prior to your MRI so you will know what to expect before you arrive. After reading the instructions, if you have any questions, please call us or ask when you arrive for your MRI. We are here to help.
